Ask Julie: How Do I Stop Feeling Depressed, Angry, and Irritable?

[dropcap]Q: [/dropcap]I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety a little more than a year ago, (although I have been feeling this way for a really long time.) I feel like I’m angry all the time. I want to be happy, but sometimes I feel like the anger is just always there. I have a wonderful husband and family and am happy with them, but I just cannot seem to shake this feeling. The littlest things bother me to where I can hold a grudge. I feel like I’m irritable a lot of the time, and sometimes, I feel as though I could just scream at any moment. Other times, I just feel like crying. I would really appreciate some feedback about this and maybe some type of mental exercises that I can do to start controlling all this built-up anger before it gets any worse.

[dropcap]A: [/dropcap]Thank you for writing in. You said you were diagnosed with depression and anxiety but I’m curious if you’re being treated for it currently? If you are on any type of medication, I suggest that you talk with your health care provider and make sure that the dosage and medication is actually helping. Please watch the video for the complete answer.

@Julie_Hanks Named Top Mental Health Experts on Twitter

Social media canstockphoto6807111

Can 140 characters really make a difference? A recent article by a top medial software company Capterra listed their top 33 mental health experts to follow on Twitter…and I made the list.

Here’s an expert from the article.

Over 280 million people use Twitter regularly, and they each spend 170 minutes per month on the social sharing service.

That adds up to a lot of time and energy invested into 140 characters or less, but it also means there’s some great, unique and authoritative voices on Twitter sharing some really awesome things.

This is especially true in the mental and behavioral health space, where not only individuals, but organizations, institutes, and departments are busy tweeting the most interesting news and thoughts on treating and understanding mental illness. I’m honored to be listed among such a prestigious group!

When Adorable Traits Become Annoying: Julie Hanks in WSJ

fatal attraction

Have you ever been annoyed by certain habits or quirks of your partner that you once found endearing? Perhaps you were drawn to a man because you admired his work ethic, but then later came to see him as a workaholic. Or maybe you initially liked how a woman was dedicated to physical fitness, but eventually felt she was self-absorbed. This phenomenon, which experts refer to as a fatal attraction, can wreak havoc on relationships.

Julie Hanks had the opportunity to give her insight on this topic in a new Wall Street Journal article out today entitled, “How to Cope When You and Your Partner are Falling Out of Love.” She and other relationship experts discuss how to appropriately handle this fatal attraction in such ways as recognizing that every character trait has pros and cons, reflecting on what you do appreciate about your romantic partner, and considering how the other person brings balance to the relationship.

Don’t let perfectionistic tendencies hold you back. Try these 5 phrases!

Ok. I admit it. I’m a recovering perfectionist. And sometimes I still find myself wrestling with unrealistic expectations. Here are my 5 go-to phrases when I slip back into old patterns of perfectionism, black and white thinking, basing my worth on my performance, or feeling reluctant to take risks.

3 Ways Parents Can Emotionally Prepare Youth for LDS Mission

3 Ways Parents Can Emotionally Prepare Youth for LDS Mission

In the LDS community, I am often asked, “How can I prepare my son or daughter for full-time missionary service?” As a therapist who sees many teens who have a mission goal in mind, I look for 3 factors that may determine success in meeting the demands of mission service.

1. Social Skills

As parents, we often focus on our child’s G.P.A, but what does their “Citizenship” grades indicate? As a parent myself, when I attend parent/teacher conferences I ask, “How does my child interact with others? Are they kind and helpful with their peers? Are they respectful to you, the teacher?”. Social skills are paramount in relating well to others when sharing the gospel, getting along with companions, (24/7!) and showing respect and good communication with interacting with zone leaders, mission presidents and all their peers in the MTC.

Ask a Therapist: How Do I Hold My Abuser Accountable?

From the time I was 8-12 I was sexually abused as well as my brother who is 4 years younger than I am . As I am getting older I am learning the thread of lies that I was told from my family regarding the situation. Growing up I believed my grandmother adopted a child from Haiti, he was 8 years older than I am. Through the time he was 19 he sexually abused myself and my younger brother. I repressed much of my memories from childhood due to this but I vividly remember the abuse. My mother took me to the University of Massachusetts sexual abuse center where I was tested for rape and attended counseling. My parents moved us to Florida away from this. I assumed he had been in trouble until recently when I found out that his high school counselor told my parents he would be deported if they reported it and it was never reported to police. After we moved for years he continued to call to talk to my brother and myself but we refused to talk to him. My grandmother and father hid most of what happened. Now that I am 29 I want him to be held accountable for his actions. To make sure he isn’t hurting any other children. I am not sure what to do or how to handle it. I wanted to contact him and after much research learned he changed his name and still was not legally in this country. Because of this abuse I have sexual issues , depression and still cannot trust people. I have seen three therapists and it never helps, just knowing he is married with a child makes me sick and scared.

A: I’m so incredibly sorry about the abuse you and your brother suffered. I suggest gathering as much information as you can about him today. Then contact Child Protective Services in your state and just ask how they would handle it. It is often empowering for a victim to report and take action against the perpetrator, even years later. Watch the video for the rest of the answer.
